The 35th anniversary revival of Kevin Elyot’s 1982 play Coming Clean, produced by King’s Head Theatre in 2017, will transfer to the West End in January. Elyot’s playwriting debut depicts the breakdown of a gay couple’s relationship, examining questions of fidelity and love.

Adam Spreadbury-Maher, the artistic director of the King’s Head Theatre, will direct the production, which will play Trafalgar Studios 2 January 9—February 2, 2019. Casting will be announced at a later date.

The West End engagement of Coming Clean is produced by King’s Head Theatre, Making Productions Limited, and Joe C. Brown.

Coming Clean premiered at the Bush Theatre in 1982. Set in North London in the early ’80s, a struggling writer and his partner of five years, Greg, reach a cross-roads in their relationship. Previously open to one-night stands, one of them begins to yearn for something resembling monogamy—until an affair unveils their differing views on love and commitment.

Elyot’s plays include My Night With Reg, The Day I Stood Still, and Mouth to Mouth, among others.

What's It About?

Set in a flat in Kentish Town, north London, in 1982. Struggling writer Tony and his partner of five years, Greg, seem to have the perfect relationship. Committed and in love, they are both open to one-night stands as long as they don't impinge on the relationship. But Tony is starting to yearn for something deeper, something more like monogamy. When he finds out that Greg has been having a full-blown affair with their cleaner, Robert, their differing attitudes towards love and commitment become clear.
