Don Juan In Soho
Don Juan In Soho
David Tennant stars in the West End premiere of Don Juan In Soho, the “funny, acerbic and biting” (The Times) play written and directed by Patrick Marber.
Loosely based on Molière’s tragicomedy 'Don Juan', this hilarious modern update transports the action to contemporary London and follows the final adventures of its debauched protagonist – a cruel seducer who lives only for pleasure.
Marking ten years since its acclaimed run at the Donmar Warehouse, David Tennant leads an electrifying cast, comprising of Adrian Scarborough, Gawn Grainger, Theo Barklem-Biggs, Mark Ebulué, Mark Extance, David Jonsson, Dominique Moore, Emma Naomi, Alice Orr-Ewing, Himesh Patel, Adrian Richards, William Spray, Danielle Vitalis and Eleanor Wyld, at Wyndham’s Theatre for a strictly limited season until 10 June.

Fabulous, thought provoking show, challenging our concept of individual liberty, personal responsibility, and lazy thinking.

Sadly I seemed to see a different show to the one reviewed by most reviewers. I go to the theatre a lot, 5 times in the last 4 weeks and this is one of the poorest plays I have seen in a long time. I am familiar with a Moliere so knew to expect an unsavoury character. David Tennant was very good but hindered by the script and production. funny in places but inconsistent so. The supporting cast was weak. Whoever thought it was appropriate to include the blaspheming scene two days after London Bridge I can only wonder at. It is a play that has not unexpectedly divided critics and audiences. It is one you have to make your open mind up on.

Having not read any of the reviews, and only deciding on seeing this production because of David Tennant and because it was drawing to a close, I had no idea what I was going to see - the whole experience surpassed any expectations! My face ached throughout and I was transfixed with DT's perfomance! I would thoroughly recommend it, although the colourful language may not appeal to the faint-hearted. The theatre is charming and the staging/lighting perfect. The duet with DT and Adrian Scarborough is unexpected and hilarious! Go and see it before it disappears :)

The first half of the show was excellent. Very funny and well acted but the play seemed to lose its way halfway. Tacking on a song at the end just leave the audience on an upbeat note felt very cheap and contrived because it did not come out organically from the play itself. We might as well have had a karaoke.

First off, if you are offended by bad language, this may not be the play for you to see! However, the strong language was totally appropriate for the dialogue and I am fairly sure that Moliere would have approved. The cast were flawless, with David Tennant given an exemplary performance, as always. Go with an open-mind and be prepared to have it blown!

The play was always going to amuse and it did to a large extent mostly because of the superb performances by David Tennant and Adrian Scarborough. Their delivery and choreography lifted the play from comic to genius. The second half was especially pleasing with fast moving scenes. Don Juan's tirade about honesty was the best part of the whole play.

David Tennant is Don Juan., his wicked sense of humour shone through in this fresh lively performance. Adrian Scarborough was perfect as his rascally partner in naughtiness I laughed till I cried and shed a tear at the end. Congratulations to all the cast for a truely memorable performance. Loved the music and the atmosphere created by the dancers and lighting...entranced by the trike ride...God Bless you All.

We had a fascinating time enjoying both the experience of the play in the moment and then discussing it afterwards. Patrick Marber's mastery of language and dialogue is superb, fast, clever, knowledgeable. You have to stay alert. The night we were there there were text displays for the hard of hearing and these were vey helpful. The topic is taken back to its origins in commedia del arte, Moliere, Mozart and da Ponte, but given such 21st century treatment that it would appeal to any theatre audience. Brilliant acting from David Tennant and other members of the cast, poignant, touching, musical, first class entertainment.

David Tennant and Adrian Scarborough saved this from being a very mediocre affair. Their chemistry, wit and comic timing was second to none as they stormed their way through the bawdy life of Don Juan. Scarborough's opening description of his bosses debauched lifestyle, Tennant's second act monologue on social media, and their bust up before getting stoned together being the three stand out scenes. The unpolished dance routines are off putting, however, and Don Juan's fate at the end of the play leaves you feeling as though the whole thing has just fizzled out rather than delivering the emotional punch you expect from other West End performances.

I was really looking forward to this show am a big fan of David Tennant and had seen good reviews. I did enjoy the show but wasn't quite as good as I expected. I enjoyed the second act more than the first particuatily the soliquiy about social media. Whilst I am in no way a fan of Donald Trump I do find it unnecessary for actors to make personal comment about him during performances. This only serves to bring more attention to the man and is not an appropriate arena to make any purposeful change or influence on the American political situation. The show which was a good adaptation of the classic story was worth seeing but not in my opinion a captivating performance

The play was brilliant! The acting of the lead actors was superb and the play in general was great and funny but at the same time it was more than that. It may seem like a play that is all about Don Juan 'habits' and dirty jokes, but it's actually a complex play, if you look past them or actually throught them and try to understand. To me it was about the human condition, morals and antimodels, especially at the end. The dancing and the jokes were there for the impact. All in all, I don't think it's a play for everyone, but I hardly recommend it. :)
