Billy Elliot The Musical

***Last Chance To See: The final performance of Billy Elliot will take place on 9 April 2016.***

Sympathetically adapted from the moving and funny film and brought to the West End in an Olivier Award-winning production, music by Elton John and choreography by Peter Darling have breathed new life into Lee Hall’s Billy Elliott.

The eleven-year-old Billy is a motherless miner’s son who discovers that he has a talent for ballet dancing. But, in order to achieve his dream of attending the Royal Ballet School and becoming a professional dancer, Billy must battle against financial impossibilities and familial and community prejudice.

Set against the backdrop of the 1984 miners’ strike, Billy Elliott is a stirringly commanding piece of theatre. The contrast between Billy’s promise and potential and the doomed efforts of the miners to protect their community is compelling.

Billy Elliott is propelled forward by its intelligent and inspired use of dance and music which manages to capture the conflict and the passion at the heart of this musical with incredible success. Rage, disappointment and triumph are expressed as physical action, and the performers fulfil their roles with grace, style and power supported by designer Ian McNeil’s sets which provide a forceful depiction of a community that is falling apart.

Booked Billy Elliott on line to see the show 22nd April 2016, I booked tickets on 19th November 2015, also booked flights at the same time from Malaga, Spain (where we now live) just to come see this show based on the full reviews! This was supposed to be a special birthday surprise for my wife, only to be sent an E;Mail on 11th December 2015 that the show would end prior to our booking. Admittedly I was offered the chance of a refund, however that wouldn't compensate me for the cost of the aborted flights from Spain nor the total disappointment of having to tell my wife that her special birthday present had been cancelled! I am so sad and sorry for my wife.

What a show, all I can say is one of the best I've seen & a shame it's going after eleven years. Sure to return one day but they do say nothing last forever, who knows. Anyway well worth the money.
