What’s Grease about?

After an electrifying summer fling, 1950s greaser Danny Zuko and girl-next-door Sandy Dumbrowski are unexpectedly reunited when Sandy is transferred to Rydell High School for their senior year. Keen to play it cool in front of his friends the ‘Burger Palace Boys’ (the T-Birds from the movie), Danny breaks Sandy’s heart when he puts his reputation before her feelings.

Much more than just a slice of American pie, this production of Grease dives into the tough, gritty world of sexual politics and simmering gangs of 1950s Chicago. Still with all the sparkle, energy and attitude that made the movie a timeless classic, the stage version cranks the story up a gear.

All your favourite characters from the movie are here – Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Kenickie, Vince Fontaine, Doody, Roger, Sonny, Frenchy, Jan, Marty, Cha Cha and even Patty Simcox!

Can Danny and Sandy’s love survive senior year, or will Rydell High tear them apart? With friendship, heartbreak, pregnancy scares and high-octane dance numbers, Grease is primed and ready to inject some sizzling heat back into those Summer Nights at the Dominion Theatre.

Grease Songs

Grease is the soundtrack to all our teenage summers. Along with songs from the original stage show – Summer Nights, Beauty School Dropout, Mooning, Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee and We Go Together - this version also includes the songs you’ll love from the movie, including: Hopelessly Devoted To You, Sandy, Grease is the Word and You’re The One That I Want.

Grease awards

It’s hard to believe now, but the movie version of Grease was only nominated in a single category at the 1978 Academy Awards. Hopelessly Devoted to You narrowly missed out for Best Original Song to “Last Dance” from Thank God It’s Friday.

The stage version recently opened in London, so watch this space next awards season!

Five fascinating Facts about Grease

How well do you know Danny, Sandy and Rydell High? Here are five fun facts to impress your musical theatre peers:

1. Danny Zuko was brought to life on the big screen by John Travolta…but on stage, he’s been played by some equally famous movie stars – no less than Patrick Swayze (Broadway) and Richard Gere (London).
2. Rumour has it that the movie’s producers wanted to cast the Happy Days actor Henry Winkler as Danny. They also considered Carrie Fisher for the role of Sandy. Imagine how different Summer Nights might have been with ‘The Fonz’ and Sandy wielding light sabres!
3. Grease was a stage show long before it hit the big screens. It opened on Broadway in 1972 – a full six years before making it into cinemas. The movie was originally going to be an animated film – an element that remains in the film’s famous opening credits.
4. Four of the Grease movie stars also appeared on Broadway. John Travolta (Danny) played Doody, Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) played Danny, and Barry Pearl (Doody) played Sonny. Actress Jamie Donnelly was the only person to play the same role on both stage and screen – the role of Jan in the Pink Ladies.
5. Olivia Newton-John was already a star before being cast in the movie version of Grease. In the stage show, Sandy’s full name is Sandy Dumbrowski – this was changed to Sandy Olsen in the film and the script altered to allow Newton-John to keep her Australian accent.

There were too many boring songs not from the film. Jason donavons voice was poor. Peter Andre was funny. Rizo was great. Sandy had no sex appeal at the end. Was OK but wouldn't recommend it

Whether rightly or wrongly for me it was not as true to the movie as I had expected. The movie was my first memory of seeing a movie as a child. I have never missed an opportunity to watch it ever since. Regardless the show was fantastic. Such wonderful young talent and what a bonus in Jason and Peter. I loved it💋
