Scary Bikers
Scary Bikers
Written and directed by John Godber. Performed by John Godber and Jane Thornton. A new comedy about life, love and staying on your bike!
When retired miner Don and former private school teacher Carol meet by chance after both suffering a loss, they thought they’d found a new beginning. But a bike ride through Europe would test their budding romance, and the road to love is rocky when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.
Join them on their hilarious and heartfelt journey, as they reconcile the past, debate the present and worry about the future. Whether they’re saddle sore in Southampton, blistered in Bordeaux or frazzled in Florence, one thing is for sure – it takes two to tandem!
Starring the double BAFTA and Olivier Award-winning partnership of John Godber and Jane Thornton, whose feature film Last Laugh was released October 2017.

I went to see ‘Scary Bikers’ with my children, who are half German, my son’s girlfriend who is half Italian and a friend. All of whom are in then process of applying for dual nationality due to fears over Brexit! As well as a staunch remainer friend. The acting and comic timing of the piece was stupendous. The ability to move the audience from one emotion to another equally seemless in its timing and simplicity. My staunch remainer friend, fully empathised with Don’s character and could relate to him. The Leitmotif of personal disbelief & loss was mirrored in the second act by the -post referendum - nationwide disbelief & loss. I loved the intimacy of the studio theatre. The physical expressions were so powerful and made you feel like part of the action. Three years after the referendum and still no wiser to what the future holds, Scary Bikers leaves you questioning your own opinions of our political system! I would highly recommend this play to anyone regardless of which side of the political fence you sit on.

I read an excellent review of Scary Bikers in The Week magazine and bought tickets for my husband's birthday as he loves bikes and follows the all the Brexit news with interest. We were not disappointed - we roared with laughter, were touched by the bereavements both characters experienced and enjoyed the atmosphere of this small, intimate venue. An absolute delight!

Very funny play. Very topicAl and a good take on Britain this year . Probably aimed at the older age group who would recognise themselves in one or other of the characters. Laughter reigned in this intimate theatre

An excellent performance of a very funny and cleverly written play. Well worth seeing regardless of your views on Brexit or your ability to ride a bike.

Really enjoyed the whole experience. Theatre staff all lovely, helpful and friendly. The show was great. Felt very intimate as it’s such a small studio but that made it even better as the audience feels like a fly on the wall. Most enjoyable evening.

Great to see JG doing his own stuff. Thought the premise was excellent and we laughed at the comedy and in recognition of the cycling experience! Thought the business with the tent was brilliant!

Highly recommend this show, topical, poignant, funny and hanky moments. For both cyclists and non cyclists.

The sentiment is simple and very current. This play highlights personal differences of opinion which have been brought about by Brexit and it has further divided those from differing socioeconomic backgrounds. It's a story about 2 people who have been brought together, initially through grief of their lost loved ones and then through a love of cycling and a desire to move their lives forward. They eventually learn to accept each others opinions and rely on each other, despite their differences. It highlights the struggles we will have, reuniting and moving forward post Brexit. If these two can do it, so can we all ! Brilliantly and insightfully observed, with some great laughs along the way !
