Matilda the Musical is a magical offering from the acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the beloved book by the incomparable Roald Dahl!
Hailed as a musical triumph and recipient of over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, this fantastic piece of theatre continues to delight audiences in London, and began its first UK & Ireland Tour in March 2018.
What Is Matilda About?
Matilda the Musical tells the story of a young girl of incredible intelligence who is determined to change her own story, even if it means being a little bit naughty...
A funny and sharp book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by celebrated Australian comedian Tim Minchin add a new dimension to this children’s favourite.
Rather than being derivative of the original tale, Matilda the Musical adds new depth to the story.
There’s all the nastiness of Dahl’s novel, with a little girl whizzed across stage by her pigtails and a boy made to eat a giant chocolate cake, but this production also revels in the consolation offered by books and the transformative power of the imagination.
Matthew Warchus’ production is witty and intelligent as well as exuberant and big-hearted.
Matilda the Musical is a fantastic depiction of the disorder of childhood and the importance of making one’s own way in the world.
Backed by sensationally creative sets and props and an extraordinary cast of child and adult actors, this musical truly sets Dahl’s story alight.
Seen lots of london shows . Matilda is without a doubt one of the best .
Brilliant show! would highly recommend.....
Having a book worm for a daughter, this has been on our MUST SEE list for a while, and when the day finally arrived, it did not disappoint. The music was phenomenal and the choreography was brilliant, and the actress who played Matilda, Olivia Juno Cleverley was an absolute diamond! From the first note she sang she was a shining star, right to the very last! Absolutely awe inspiring! The best bit was witnessing the reaction of my 8YO, every gasp, every chuckle and the moment she grabbed my hand when chokey was revealed - it really is a fantastic experience!
Matilda was spectacular from start to finish.... The children were all incredible especially Matilda but in reality all of them and everyone looked like they were having a throughly good time .... the staging and special effects were slick and seamless.... We loved every minute of it and we really want to see it again absolutely Thank you
loved it! would 100% recommend. the stage is amazing!
Excellent production!! Children were marvellous and very talented - adults too.
What an amazing show. Funny energetic and heartwarming. The cast of children are fantastic. Would definitely recommend for children and adults!!
This was my second time seeing Matilda this year and I honestly have to say it was so amazing the second time around! I loved it the first time but this time it was so powerful. I did cry a little as it was emotional and towards the end it was so heart warming as the new Matilda started to tear up and that was cute.
Went for daughters birthday. Adults and children thoroughly enjoyed it. Fun and laughter throughout and amazing view even from the back!
Amazing show couldn’t fault it the children played a fantastic role
Did not disappoint - loved every minute shear genius
We all thoroughly enjoyed it. We went as a family of 4 (kids aged 7 and 11) Seeing the emotions and actions from the kids was almost as entertaining (7 year old holding onto his ears during the ear scene!)
Fantastic performance by a highly talented team. Better than I expected! Well done all!
We were in the upper circle and couldn’t hear the children singing clearly
My third time seeing it and I loved it just as much . All the cast are outstanding especially Matilda and the trunchball. I can wait for my little granddaughter to be old enough to take her .
Great acting from all, especially the children and Tim Minchin's music is ace. 4 stars because it's virtually impossible to see everything from the Upper Circle, and this isn't made clear when booking. Even adults were craning their necks for much of the show when there was action nearer the front of the stage.
These tickets were booked by my mother as a birthday treat for both myself and daughter. I suffer from light sensitive epilepsy and read all the information on the website and at the theatre. Nowhere on the website does it state that strobe lighting is used throughout the show at great lengthm so it cane as a great shock when they started. We were eventually moved to different seats but having to get up and leave my 7 year old daughter on her own was quite unacceptable. Again the usher moved us to a box with a bit more shade from the lights but I still had to dive down and cover my eyes to prevent an epileptic fit. It completely spoiled my experience and was so afraid of having a fit in front of my 7 year old daughter and on our own. Sadly not a good experience at all, light sensitive epilepsy is a hidden disability that no one seems to care about😥😥😥 what about children with epilepsy, do they not matter do they not want to go to a children's musical? I'm very upset and unhappy 🙁
My daughter and I absolutely loved Matilda the Musical - such an energetic, enthusiastic and fun performance by the cast. It was a really entertaining evening and a wonderful introduction to London theatre for us, so much so that we're already planning another trip!
A really good show for kids and adults. Loads of great songs.
This performance was very good and is the second time I've seen it this year.
This show was fantastic! I had pre-conceptions about what it would be like, but it was different enough to both the book and the film to be stand alone amazing! The songs and the choreography were brilliant.
The musical was performed excellently. Every word, spoken and sung, was clear. I really enjoyed the way the scenery changed and was impressed with the cast in their assisting with sets. 'Matilda' was wonderful. Lots to learn and it seemed word perfect. Well done! Definitely recommend.
Well worth going to see . Fantastic performance.
Absolutely fantastic show
Brilliant show - clever, funny, dark in parts (obviously, it’s Dahl), uplifting. Great songs and fantastic cast, particularly the kids. My kids loved it and want to go back soon.
Excellent show.....a definite must see especially good introduction to the theatre for younger people and children
Fabulous show, fabulous cast really enjoyed the afternoon
Everything about this show was brilliant. The music and especially the dancing was superb.
Matilda was the most exciting thrilling and heart stopping show actors were spectacular loved and would see it again
K24 Upper Circle, if someone sitting 2 rows in front of you happens to be a big guy and he decides to lean forward for the entire duration of the show - you are screwed. The show itself is good though but couldn’t concentrate on enjoying it due to restricted views. Also, I have paid £49.95 from the show’s official box office website, however the physical tickets I collected from the actual theatre’s box office saying face value of £39.95, which I find unacceptable without explanation.
Matilda is brillant. Its funny and staged in brilliant Road Dahl grotesque style. Its funny and the staging is cool and the child actors are brillant. But the sound quality from the upper circle for the songs is pretty bad. There are large parts of the songs and sometimes the childrens (with higher voices) speaking parts that you can’t hear - which is a shame caus you miss the jokes and having listened to the songs on spotify since they are also brilliant. Upon booking you’re warned that there’s a restricted view and thats fine. But you sort of don’t expect not to be able to hear clearly. Its a shame.
The show was just incredible! Fantastic music, actors and general entertainment! We have seen lots of shows and this really stood out as a family pleaser! My children are 6 and 7 and they both loved it! The Cambridge theatre is also s great space - traditional but modern and clean! Plenty of toilets and places to get refreshments without huge queues
I really terrific show and amazing talented young cast. The songs are super and my 8 year old daughter left the show with stars in her eyes- she wants to go to stage school!! 😊
We as a family of four, two grandparents, auntie and one grandson loved the energy, the acting and the singing was wonderful, how you got the children to be so athletic is amazing. The only thing and we all agreed was it was just too loud., perhaps it was because of where we were sitting in the 3rd row stalls?? We've been to lots of shows in London over the years and the volume at Matilda was the loudest. We thought it was a very polished performance and would recommend the show. Our grandson loved his first show in London. Well done all.
Excellent acting . Brilliant
This show was amazing! After waiting years to get tickets i treated my 13 year old daughter to this show. She had wanted to see it for ages and it was above and beyond what we both expected. Professional and talented young cast, wonderful vocals, visually spectacular and so much fun. Thank you for making a Matilda a person of colour as the role is not determined by race and doesn’t have to be one way. She was brilliant and deserved a standing ovation. So great for my daughter to see someone like her on stage in a leading role! Only criticism was that there were quite a few late arrivals which disrupted our viewing but only temporarily. Perhaps an announcement reminder for people to take their seats? Staff were constantly having to get up and tell people to stop taking photographs of the set which I imagine is quite annoying for them.
We enjoyed the performance but were told to move seats at a random point in order to allow very large groups of children in late. We didn’t move as we wouldn’t have been able to see and were in the seats we had paid for!!! There were constant comings and goings with children being led in throughout the first half and it really did spoil the atmosphere and then one of the ushers told a little girl in front of us to be quiet!!! Outrageous as she had been leading in the latecomers! She had very poor people skills.
I took my 5 year old, Matilda obsessed, granddaughter for birthday treat. She was spellbound and totally engrossed. She was a bit anxious that Bruce would really explode but loved every minute.
Magical show, took my daughter and we both absolutely loved it.. amazing views and fantastic performance..I would definitely recommend to everyone..X
What a magical show. Such musicality and such talent.
Creative, fun, beautifully sung and performed. I took my 7 year old as a birthday treat and it was absolutely wonderful.
Absolutely amazing! Thought my youngest daughter, aged 5, would loose interest half way through but she was completely engaged and absolutely loved it... we all did, even my husband. Would definitely recommend. Fun, exciting, a great family event.
My 8 year old daughter says "This is one step up from the film, it's amazing!". Mummy really enjoyed it too!
Brilliant. The grandkids really enjoyed the play. Was very impressed with Matilda. Wonderful play.
Fantastic show for all ages. Acting and sets were excellent. I would definitely recommend this show.
It was fun, my son of 7 enjoyed it very much.
We loved Matilda from start to finish. It was funny, sad and brilliantly performed. We really enjoyed the swing scene and the special effects. Would highly recommend.
As a newbee to West musicals I thought the actual performance was outstanding. BUT I found it hard to hear what the the actors and actresses were saying due to the rustling of sweep papers and the audience talking. A bit of shame.
Excellent musical and most enjoyable.
