A Christmas Carol with Simon Callow
A Christmas Carol with Simon Callow
Following sell-out seasons in 2011/12 and critical and audience acclaim, Simon Callow returns in this much-lauded production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, playing at the Arts Theatre for a strictly limited season from 8 December. Based on Dickens' own performance adaptation, Simon Callow and director-designer Tom Cairns have created a one-man theatrical extravaganza of festive story-telling that is both heart-warming and deeply moving. A Christmas must-see for 8-88 year olds! Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL is one of the most beloved books in the English language. It has become a classic Christmas tale for generations of grown-ups and children alike. As the ghosts spirit Scrooge from the present to his past and future, Dickens takes us on a magical journey from the miser's dank and creaking house to cosy hearths, and from snowy graveyards to joyful festivities. This treasured story offers a celebration of goodness, a plea for justice and the promise of redemption. Simon Callow, one of the nation's best loved actors, returns to Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL after huge international success with The Mystery of Charles Dickens (West End and Broadway), national acclaim for Dr Marigold & Mr Chops and guest starring as Dickens on Doctor Who (BBC). Notable recent acting work has included his performance as Count Fosco, the villain of Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White, both in film and on stage; as Pozzo in Beckett's Waiting for Godot opposite Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Patrick Stewart and Ronald Pickup; and as the psychiatrist in Chichester Festival Theatre's production of Peter Shaffer's Equus.

I wasn't disappointed with this production it was everything I expected and more. I'm amazed at Simon Callow's energetic storytelling which he made come so alive for the whole hour and a bit. Anyone who hasn't seen this yet is in for a treat. It was really special to see it just before Christmas too

As my 14year old daughter commented at the end... 'how does he remember an entire book and so brilliantly?' And,' I thought I'd be bored but it was really exciting and time passed so quickly'. I replied... 'he' s passionate about his subject. He was basically 'Dickens'. We both loved it all. I've read this story every Christmas for the past 7years and it was our book club choice this November but NOTHING brings it to life as convincingly as this performance. An absolute MUST SEE for all Dickens fans and beyond. Bravo Mr Callow

Excellent adaptation of this Dickens classic. The fact that it was just one actor working with the minimum of stage props meant that the true message of this story was delivered without any distraction and all the more powerful for it. A brilliant performance from Mr.Callow. Highly recommended.

A Dickens Classic done in the most fantastic way. A brilliant stage set with a craftsman of his art in Simon Callow. What more could one want? Absolutely mesmerising could watch it all again. Only negative were children in the audience that were too young to understand or care about the performance. Try to keep it to over 8s.

If it wasn't impressive enough that he memorised the book it was delivered brilliantly with a warmth and an engagement that brought the story to life. Outstanding.

There are times in Theatre when one leaves feeling completely satisfied. Simon Callow's rendition of a Christmas Carol was one such occasion. His characterisation was both original in subtle humorous interpretations through movement sequences, beautifully traditional in the sense that Scrooge was Scrooge and nephew Fred full of warm benevolence but perhaps his brilliance lay in the timing of character response and change. Stage effects were fascinating and perfectly balanced being neither over nor under done. A Christmas treat not to be missed.

I enjoyed every minute of this show. Simon Callow was incredible and told the story in a way that you come out wondering how on earth he convinced you that only one actor was required to portay all of the characters in the story. The set was simple and absolutely captivating. The last few lines of the show were delivered beautifully and I will keep and honour Christmas always!

Attended a matinee performance with my family including my 14 year old daughter. Simon Callow is absolutely brilliant as a storyteller with a perfect mix of narrative, acting and comedy with a handful of props and illuminated back drop. He held the audiences attention throughout the performance. Left the theatre feeling very Christmassy!!
