What Is An American In Paris About?
An American In Paris is about an American GI who decided to stay and live in France as the WWII ends. He chooses Paris - a city that is bursting with possibilities and dreams - to get started in his dream career as a painter. He then meets a beautiful and mysterious Parisian ballet dancer, whom he can't help but fall in love with.
What is most enjoyable about An American In Paris is the ballet-musical-theatre fusion, which brings together the beauty of the ballet with the action and storyline of a musical. The stage design is very modern and striking, transporting the audience to the heart of Paris and the quai of the river Seine.

Brilliant show
Took a French friend. So appropriate
The whole show is wonderfully choreographed down to the details of moving props with flourish and grace. The dancing is superb and the music marvellous. A brilliant evening out for all! Thank you!
Fantastic show brilliant music choreography costumes Unfortunately my seats where in the stall area row V seats7.8 in front of me was a lady not tall at all and I couldn’t see the stage
Very disappointed we left after 30 minutes.
S'wonderful
A big bold production that is a dance aficionados dream. It's witty as well.
I was entertained from beginning to end. Sumptuous costumes and the singing and dancing was fantastic! Make lead - his dancing was SO good and he had such a great voice. Shame it’s cone to an end
One of the best shows ever see, thank you so much
Brilliant contained everything.
Great show, lovely ballet, in parts was a little slow with lots of talking at times and we could not hear all of what was being said even thought we were in row n near the front/middle. We did enjoy the show, music, & songs we did not know we knew ! The set was put together very elegantly with glamorous costumes.
I hope this show tours. Wonderful sets. Glorious dancing and characters to really care about.
Great show but too much ballet for my niece and I but it was our choice. The 2nd half was loads better, especially after I asked them during interval to make the AC cooler as several people dozed off in the first half and didn't return after intermission. It was like a sauna until interval.
The show the production and the theatre was fantastic
I booked two seats to see An American in Paris as an 80th birthday present for my mother just after Christmas. The show was excellent, well sung and with great scenery. However we only saw around a half of it as the view of the stage was obstructed by the heads of the people in front of us. We had seats in the stalls (row R) at £75 each and I had assumed that we would be able to see the stage. Our experience was ruined by this and we came away feeling cheated and robbed by the theatre.
Very enjoyable, fine dancing, singing and energy all round
I managed to get the last stalls seats at an affordable price for An American in Paris, 2 days befor the end of the run. So glad as the whole performance was steeped in style as well as substance. Brilliant costumes and imaginative sets whisked myself and 2 friends straight back to post war France and its colourful artistic community. Vive La France
predictable storyline, with only average dialogue, but surpassed by the amazing dancing, scenery ,amazing set changes, one that had the audience gasping and applauding, costumes, and quick fire costume changes and singing. I absolutely loved it, my husband only liked it.
The show was great and the dancers were very professional and the whole cast and musicians performed a seamless show, very enjoyable.
What a performance - we loved it. It was so lively with dancing to equal any ballet I've seen!
Maybe I had pre-conceived ideas about this musical, expecting something similar to the film, but I was surprised to see how balletic it was. Whilst the dancing and singing was good, the mixing of ballet type dancing and singing together, didn't quite work for me. The staging and scenery movement was very cleverly done and the music was great, but I don't think I'd rush back to see it again.
Brilliant.total,and utter entertainment
Excellent
I honestly am still in total awe of what I watched last night! After booking the tickets for me and my best friend to see the show as part of her Christmas present, I was unsure as to what to expect but blimey was it good! It was my first ever West End show and as a dancer myself, I have always wanted to perform as a backing dancer for artists on tour etc, which is still a dream of mine, however after last nights performance, I now have my heart set on performing on the West End. The dancers were absolutely phenomenal and there was not a single moment where my jaw wasn't dropped in total amazement. Well done and thank you to all of the performers, directors, producers and orchestra who made my night last night one I'll never forget!
Full justice given to a wonderful musical by versatile dancers, singers and orchestra. A real treat: so many lovely melodies, far more than advertised...
My husband and I are staunch supporters of opera and ballet, and only went to London at last moment as our daughter said it was terrific. It was frankly about the best show we have ever seen-superb choreography and lighting, lovely dancing by the leads and amazing corps du ballet throughout. And they had done a matinee earlier! It was non-stop pace and the coordination with stage and scenery constant change faultless. Full marks to all.
absolutely amazing and happy making!!! A great evening, could see it again and again.
The dance/actors were outstanding; the sets and costumes amazing and the choreography, the best work the choreographer has done. The whole audience were completely engaged with the story from the beginning to end and gave a standing ovation. The orchestra and conductor should also be praised for playing the memorable score so beautifully.
Excellent show, slightly long dance sequence towards the end, but otherwise fantastic cast and enjoyable evening out
So pleased I got to see this before it closes this week. It is truly beautiful from the staging, choreography, costumes and performances. Well done to the female lead understudy who had to stand in partway through the first act and gave a magnificent performance. It is the perfect blend of musical and ballet and is a truly unique experience. I loved it
Great show if you like ballet.
One for children and adults, working on different levels a great story with new interpretations of those classic musical numbers. Dance, singing and music were all terrific. The stage designs and lighting were incredible, together with a top rate orchestra. All in all a fantastic evening which will last long in the memory.
Amazing when the lead lady changes during the performance due to illness congratulations to the entire cast
What a show! incredible dancers, fantastic set changes, best we have ever seen! The two leads playing Lise and Jerry were so beautiful, so graceful and elegant, their moves flowed together seamlessly in one continuous ribbon of movement it was breathtaking and emotional. I love loved loved it :)
Excellent performance Outstanding director
First half of show was a little flat with not enough highlights. Second half was strong and had highlights and the wow factor. Dancing superb but would like more tap on numbers: 'I've got rhythm' and 'it's wonderful, it's marvellous' and 'stairway to paradise'. Ballet scene superb choreography .
It was spectacular. The dance numbers were amazing and the costuming was brilliant.
Enjoyed it.
We really loved the musical. The choreography was amazing and we really loved the set design.
It was lovely to see such young and talented cast. Great costume and set design.
Singing, dancing, great scenery and props. What's not to like!
excellent production Singing, Dancing, Costumes, Orchestra, Sets faultless
Exquisite dancing, amazing set, great costumes. Fabulous show
Absolutely stunning performance
A lovely light and soothing experience in the midst of hectic Christmas and New Year activities. Though the story line is simple the creative settings, amazing scenery and utterly superb dancing made this a treat.
Excellent show with very good music. All the cast are indeed excellent
Great singing, great dancing and beautiful set! Such a marvellous adaptation from film to theatre. Very enjoyable evening
Marvellous Gershwin music and outstanding dance.
I really enjoyed this show, particularly the second half, where the main dance number was incredible . Leanne Cope is an amazing dancer, beautiful lines and feeling for her dance. Ashley Day also a wonderful dancer, and partenered Leanne beautifully.
