Father Comes Home From The Wars (1,2&3)
Father Comes Home From The Wars (1,2&3)
After a critically-acclaimed run in New York, Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 &3) arrives in London’s West End.
A play in three parts, Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 &3) tells the story of a slave named Hero who joins the Confederate Army in exchange for his freedom. As Hero fights alongside his master and against those seeking to abolish slavery, his family argues over whether to wait for his return or flee, fearing that freedom may come at too great a cost.
Written by Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 &3) took New York by storm when it opened in 2014. The first instalment in what will be a nine-play saga, this astounding work draws on the structure of Homer’s The Odyssey to tell a thrilling story about freedom and duty. Shifting faultlessly from harsh realism and playful wit to breathtaking verse, Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 &3) is already being hailed as Parks’ masterpiece.

Gripping... totally compelling. Suzan-Lori Parks’s three-part play is epic in every sense

[Suzan-Lori Parks] thrillingly leads the charge for a new kind of “historical” drama.

Went to see Father Comes Home From The Wars (1,2&3) last night at the Royal Court. The 3 hours went unnoticed as my wife and I submerged ourselves in some amazing dialogue delivered by a fantastic troupe of actors. Every actor delivered their role in the most believable fashion. Homer and the dog stole the show though. Great night.

Brilliant play. It has so much relevance in our modern lives. It shows one how difficult it is to detach oneself from the world we are used to.

It was a fab play, the acting was so on point, a standing ovation was a must. Really hit home on certain issues. It is definitely a must see, you would be a fool to miss it. Prepare yourself though, it's a 3 hour production.

Brilliant, moving, disturbing Steve Tousaint is a genius. The internal rhythm he builds within every scene and act are masterful. Wonderful characterisation

Good acting, thought provoking. Which meant that my friend and I discussed the play all the way back to Bristol!...in a good way.

We really enjoyed the play which was all the better for the excellent guitar and banjo music at the side of the stage. The acting and atmosphere were great and we enjoyed our first visit to The Royal Court which had been recommended to us.

We enjoyed the play very much. They all acted well. It seemed a bit long in some parts .The guitar player was great which made the play that much more enjoyable. I Would recommend it. We were upgraded to stalls seat when we booked the balcony.

I came home and sent an email to all my theatre -going friends to be sure to come or they will miss something that is funny, and moving along with being entertaining and informative with a cast that was perfection. It covers a period in American history from a view we are not often privileged to share and I look forward to parts 2 and 3!

It was really well acted but it was quite slow. It was an I threshing storyline but as there was nothing going on but dialogue, it was hard to keep focused all the time. Glad I went though

A powerful play, written with clarity and depth of feeling. Great acting, both ensemble and individual. Dex Lee in Act Three was brilliant. He brought a new dimension to the play, lifting the dramatic tension superbly with his acting.

A really well written, interesting, moving and amusing play. Don't be put off by the long title or the 'the show is three hours long' warning. We enjoyed it and weren't conscious of the time. Definitely recommended.

This show packs a real punch. The issue of race and equality which devastated slave and enslaver in the 19th century was bought to light. The questions posed then still speaks to the issues today in the 21st century that continues to devastate lives both black and white. The play delivers a spotlight on these past events and in doing so highlights race issues which on the surface may appear vastly changed but in truth and as fundamentals remains the same. Outstanding in words and performance. The language has a touch of the blues - unabashed harsh truths. Not to be missed.

It is always good to remind ourselves of history and ironically the essence of the play is also relevant today with slavery increasing. Excellent acting, accompanying periodic music added to the atmosphere of the play. I highly recommend.

Disappointing. Too slow. Too much dialogue. Good story behind the idea but the whole thing needs a lot more punch . Lack-lustre. Not engaging enough.for the average audience

It was not what I expected as the title didn't match what I had in mind. I thought the story would be based on a father coming home from the war to his family but was pleasantly surprised by the way the plot unfolded. I loved the question hero posed to himself when he asked what he would do with himself now that had gained his freedom. He had the freedom to choose his own name but initially was reluctant to understand what freedom entailed. It was a great play about self determination and the power we have in ourselves to determine our fate and express ourselves in the constraints of "society" and its opinions. It was a play about slavery but its message was universal, we all have our freedoms regardless of race, gender, nationality (to an extent), creed, age and social and economic status but ultimately what are we going to do with it.

There were four of us and my three guests all wanted to leave after the interval. The first half was 1hour 50minutes long. The second half would have been another 45minutes. I would have gone back to watch the second half but it was three to one, so we left. I will pay for a ticket again for myself and just go and watch the second half. With all due respects to my three guests, it was very drawn out for the first half an hour. It could do with some serious editing especially in the opening scene. The people sitting next to us, also left during the interval. This was a preview so, hopefully, there will be some serious editing before opening night because it was well acted and a very interesting play.

The play brought forth ideas that were uncomfortable but necessary to consider. Despite the era the play was set in the ideas were still relevant for today's audience.

This was an excellent depiction of a historical event/timeframe in a snap shot. As an African American from the south I appreciated the illustration. History should be understood, and this was a great way to show it. Thanks....
