A View From The Bridge
A View From The Bridge
A View from the Bridge is a tragic masterpiece. Taking its cues from Greek tragedy, Miller’s affecting play offers a tense and uncompromising look at the American dream. Now transferring to London’s West End, the Young Vic’s production of this modern classic has been hailed as a triumph by critics and audiences alike.
Set in Brooklyn, the play tells the story of longshoreman Eddie Carbone who lives with his wife and seventeen-year-old niece Catherine. When the family takes in two illegal immigrants, Eddie’s Sicilian cousins, Catherine falls for one of them and Eddie’s possessive love for her erupts.
Bursting free from the confines of naturalism, this acclaimed production offers a fresh and compelling re-telling of a play by one of America’s greatest writers. The Young Vic production of this stark and passionate tale will transfer to London’s Wyndham’s Theatre with most of its original cast, visionary director Ivo van Hove and designer Jan Versweyveld, whose bare stage and superbly crafted visual imagery lend this intense and gripping story further power.
Stage and screen actor Mark Strong (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Sherlock Holmes) will reprise his role as the destructive Eddie Carbone and Nicola Walker (Last Tango in Halifax, Spooks) will again play Eddie’s devoted wife Beatrice.
An incredible production of an extraordinary play, be warned, tickets to A View from the Bridge will be in short supply.

So glad I came up from Dorset to see this play. I was left drained but hugely satisfied. Mark Strong was magnificent.

Mark Strong is phenomenal in the lead role, the standout of the production. The set was a big surprise - sparse and yet somehow the play still works. The ending is made particularly powerful by something quite shocking that happens...

This Ivo Van Hove production is amazing, intense and superbly acted. Well worth a visit if you can catch it before the end of it's limited season at The Wyndham's. Cast and production are fantastic, and Mark Strong (as ever!) is pure class. An acting tour-de-force. By the way .. Remember to bring your tissues!

Totally gripped from beginning to end . Miller is a master of suspense , but this was something special as the protagonists sparred and suffered in an arena that was quite gladiatorial at times . One of the most moving and gripping plays I have seen

This hard hitting production of A View From the Bridge is completely stripped bare. The actors appear as if in a cage, and the tension is ramped up steadily until it is almost unbearable. Mark Strong's Eddie Carbone is rugged and powerful right to the very end, when he is cornered and lashes out like a trapped and wounded animal. One of the best plays I have seen in a long time, and one that stays with you long after the curtain has come down.

Stripped back production - very emotive performance from all cast. Mark Strong was an amazing Eddie with great Brooklyn accent and the character Rodolpho was brilliantly played also. A great success!

A stunning stripped back production by Ivo Van Hove which brilliantly showcases the power of Miller's play. Mark Strong is extraordinary as Eddie Carbone. He seems to grow physically as the play progresses to its inevitable climax but he never loses the sympathy of the audience despite his increasingly unhinged behaviour. The elements of ancient Greek tragedy that permeate the play have never been better elicited

The stripped back staging of this show allowed the acting to take my full focus. Two hours with no break and a handful of characters could have been uncomfortable but instead I genuinely checked my watch at close because it seemed impossible that two hours had elapsed. The gathering momentum of the writing together with the conviction and intensity of the acting left me overwhelmed as it finished in a multi sensory climax which was perfectly staged. It took several minutes to break from its spell such was the powerful grip of the emotion. This was an exceptional play with exceptional acting.

A marvellous production. really liked the minimalist staging - found myself concentrating more on the words. thought the bloody ending was very effective although think it important that eddie is seen to have the knife which turns on himself and kills him. he brings about his own death. Wonderful still performance from Beatrice. Eddie very convincing although maybe not quite vulnerable enough. thought the stilted conversation scene was particularly effective as was the hitting of eddie by Katherine. Sometimes found Katherine hard to understand; the accent got in the way of the words.

I went to this show purely because of Mark Strong (if I am honest!) but I have to say all the performers were excellent and the show kept me gripped in my seat until the very end! Very unsettling but an excellent story! Well done to one and all!

The show was very good with the actors commanded the attention of the audience with their passion on stage. Mark STRONG was outstanding . The middle of the show is slow but ends with a fantastic climax and the stage setting was unusual and neutral which transferred all the attention onto the actors on stage.

Excellent execution of Miller's tragedy. Mark Strong conveys Eddie's struggle with his conscience with regards to his niece, tribal and legal law superbly.

The most memorable theatre performance that I have attended. I was lucky enough to have a stage seat so really did have the best view and experience. From the first view of a half naked Eddie to the final death scene I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I later realised how I had seen the majority of the cast in all my favourite TV and film viewing, I have never read the play before and admit freely that my motivation for going was to see the main man. Powerfull, complex and tackling issues that are as relevant today, The Background music was very affective and the final scene was stunning, My only complaint was the sometimes terrible american accents by the younger members of the casts. This is still a 5 star performance and Mark deserves an award for this

Simply Suberb! The stripped back set and production enabled the intensity of the acting to shine through. The cast and particularly Mark Strong are outstanding and the themes of the play will stay with you long after you leave the auditorium. A brilliant piece of theatre of a quality which is very special and rare to find.

This was a good production but in my opinion not perhaps worthy of the hype it has received. Did not think the sparse setting added much and the acoustics were very disappointing in our £68 seats. Had to strain to hear and missed many lines. One problem is that, as it is in the round, the actors often speak with their backs to the main audience.

From the back row of the balcony, both myself and my companion occasionally lost small sections of dialogue, particularly when people arriving a bit late crossed in front of us - which happened three times - and was distracting. Having said that, I was impressed by the fact that we could hear most of it from such a distance thanks to the professional efforts of all the cast. Visually, the play was much better than I had expected when I first took my seat and first became aware of how very far from the stage we actually were (vertigo moment). Initially, I thought that it would be impossible to follow any of the action, so I was subsequently quite relieved to find myself enjoying the staging, the movements, the voices, and fully engaging with the story. I did not previously know this play and found that the plot held my attention from start to finish ... which is really what I hope for and expect from a visit to the theatre. The acting was superb and the unfolding antagonisms of the characters made proper sense due to a great script properly handled. Unfortunately at times I could not see the head of a character when he or she was standing next to the door at the back-centre of the stage because of the position of my seat and this was annoying. At one point during the play, I could only guess at which of the male characters was stationed there! Overall, I would say that I would need to double my income and get a better positioned seat before returning to the Wyndham's Theatre. The silhouette effect of the actors when they entered the foreground of the arena-like space was, nevertheless, quite magnificent .. and I have no regrets about managing to see this play performed. I would just like to add that the atmosphere, décor, staffing, architecture, images etc. of the Wyndham was a novelty for me, and created a pleasurable overall experience, thank you.

Very fine acting too. The "but" applies only to the grave difficulty of hearing the words spoken, and that from towards the back of the stalls, row O, seat 5.

Ivo van Hove's A View from the Bridge was one of the best plays I've seen in the West End for years. Mark Strong was superb, and the rest of the cast was very strong too; there were no weak links!. The minimalist staging was very effective and the music was moving without being too obtrusive. The showers of blood at the end seemed a bit over-the-top, but it did allow the director to elide the obvious literal ending, and to imply that all the characters were involved in and tainted by the tragedy.
