The Audience
The Audience
Kristin Scott Thomas stars in the West End return of Peter Morgan’s 2013 sensation The Audience.
Every week, the Queen meets with the Prime Minister. No officials are present at these meetings, no minutes are taken and both parties share an agreement to never repeat what is said.
The Audience looks back at sixty years’ worth of private meetings between Queen Elizabeth II and her ministers. Her Majesty meets with everyone from Churchill to Cameron in her role as advisor to the elected head. However, in truth, the Queen is only sometimes advisor to her ministers, others she is admonisher, counsellor, consoler and even confessor.
Writer Peter Morgan (The Queen) draws on the scant amount of anecdotal evidence about these sacred tête-a-têtes to create a vivid portrayal of some very private moments. This extraordinarily clever, funny and tender play moves fluidly through the years to depict the ordinary and extraordinary situations Her Majesty the Queen must face. In time for the general election and coinciding with the opening of the play on Broadway, The Audience offers a compelling re-imagining of these sometimes tense, sometimes funny and always secret meetings.
The indomitable Kristin Scott Thomas will take up the role of Queen Elizabeth II, played in the original production by Helen Mirren who is set to reprise the part on Broadway.
Directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, Skylight) and playing at London’s Apollo Theatre, The Audience will be the highlight of the theatre season and tickets will be in high demand.

Loved it. It was bang up to date as well with reference to the recently published photos of the Queen and Nazi salute!! As with many London theatres that weren't built for comfort (or for smaller people!) leg room was non-existant, but managed to move at the interval.

The Audience was hugely entertaining. Firstly, Kristin Scott Thomas gives a very convincing performance as the Queen, and without giving anything away, has some lines which get a lot of laughs. The various prime ministers are very well caricatured. The young Elizabeth, played by Marnie Brighton, deserves a special mention. Her clear tones and demeanour were very reminiscent of the young Queen, and the corgies were an endearing addition. Overall this is first class theatre.

Have been looking forward to this for a long time & it didn't disappoint - whole cast excellent including the 4 legged ones. Still don't understand why it wasn't chronological or why Heath, Macmillan & Home were excluded. A great evening's entertainment.

Very enjoyable. We wondered about the use of the word redacted in the context of the play. Also why are you asking for a review of a play that is about to finish its run.

I enjoyed every minute of it and appreciated the fact that the play is being adopted to take into account even the latest political news.

An interesting look at English politicians and their relationships with the sovereign...through clever lines and interpretive actions, we are reminded they are all just ordinary folks...

Far more witty and sympathetic than we expected. A clever and topical script, beautifully carried by an excellent cast. We would go again.

Thoroughly enjoyed this production. Kristen Scott Thomas gave a sympathetic, humorous and extremely 'watchable' portrayal of the Queen. The 'ministers' and the rest of the cast were excellent. Thought the intermittent portrayal of the Queen as a child an excellent dramatic device. Very glad I saw this before it ended.

Lead acting was excellent -was a very refreshing view of the relationship between the monarch and her government and I thought it did bring out the essence of each of the characters apart from Gordon Brown who was too much of a caricature to be authentic. Christin Scott Thomas sustained the role throughout and the young queen gave a perspective on the queens development and her thinking.

The play was excellent as was Kristin Scott Thomas in the lead. She initially had mixed reviews but on the strength of the show we saw, she must have really grown into the role superbly. The rest of the cast are also very good. Thatcher and Cameron ham it up for comic effect at times which is fun and the coronation is quite a spectacle.

Kirsten Scott Thomas was outstanding in role of Queen Elizabeth II. She had mastered facial expressions and phrasing of speech perfectly. The supporting cast was very strong, with particular kudos to the young actress who played young Princess Elizabeth, the actors who played Harold Wilson and Gordon Brown. The play shows the wit and humor of the Queen, as well as the seriousness with which she approaches her responsibilities. Highly recommended to anyone interested in politics and a well-written dramatic production.

Kristin Scott Thomas gives a fun, subtle and charismatic performance as the queen. Likewise a pleasure to cringe through meetings with Cheshire cat Blair and a squirming Cameron.

A play with wit, humor and empathy. Very enjoyable, and informative. Incredible acting from Scott Thomas, who portrays so much feeling, often without even speaking!

Very interesting, beautifully written, funny and brilliantly acted by all the cast. Kristen Scott Thomas captured the Queen's poise, stature and vocal dynamics very convincingly. The little girl (Maddie) who played Princess Elizabeth was delightful and really enhanced the non naturalism of the production. It's true that the prime ministers were caricatures, but that was the style of the production. I also loved the costumes.

This play gives a great insight into what might have been said between The Queen and her Prime Ministers - ranging from Churchill to Cameron. Witty and serious conversations about historical events. Even two unexpected members of the Royal Household made an appearance! An excellent performance by all the cast, especially by Kristin Scott Thomas who has a very demanding part playing The Queen over sixty years.

Kristin S-T was great (as ever), and the various Prime Ministers were very funny caricatures. The script, and the delivery of it, kept the audience amused throughout.

Where to start? The set was simple and absolutely effective The costumes were out of this world. The actors and acting were sublime. The humour of the relationships between HM and PM's was spot on - on a par with "Yes, Prime Minister" And Kristen Scot Thomas was unbelievable - she does it every time Well done everyone involved
