Sympathetically adapted from the moving and funny film and brought to the West End in an Olivier Award-winning production, music by Elton John and choreography by Peter Darling have breathed new life into Lee Hall’s Billy Elliott.
The eleven-year-old Billy is a motherless miner’s son who discovers that he has a talent for ballet dancing. But, in order to achieve his dream of attending the Royal Ballet School and becoming a professional dancer, Billy must battle against financial impossibilities and familial and community prejudice.
Set against the backdrop of the 1984 miners’ strike, Billy Elliott is a stirringly commanding piece of theatre. The contrast between Billy’s promise and potential and the doomed efforts of the miners to protect their community is compelling.
Billy Elliott is propelled forward by its intelligent and inspired use of dance and music which manages to capture the conflict and the passion at the heart of this musical with incredible success. Rage, disappointment and triumph are expressed as physical action, and the performers fulfil their roles with grace, style and power supported by designer Ian McNeil’s sets which provide a forceful depiction of a community that is falling apart.

'Stephen Daldry's production of Billy Elliot is big and bold, imaginative and great-hearted... Billy Elliot strikes me as the greatest British musical I have ever seen, and I have not forgotten Lionel Bart's Oliver! or Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. There is a rawness, a warm humour and a sheer humanity here that are worlds removed from the soulless slickness of most musicals... the whole cast is blessed with a freshness and sincerity I have rarely seen equalled, and one leaves this triumphant production in a mist of tears and joy.

A brilliant show, really enjoyed every bit of it, fantastic cast, so very talented. The most moving part was the miners at the end going down into the pit, unashamedly crying my eyes out at that point!!! Will recommend it to all my friends and family. Many thanks.

I loved the movie and was worried that the musical didn't use the same soundtrack. However, the production was superb, and educational about the upheavals in the British economy during the mine troubles. The story of Billy and his family was so touching. The musical hits all the notes of joy, sadness and inspiration.

I did not enjoy this production as much as I had expected to. I felt there was far too much swearing, particularly in view of the amount of children involved in this show. In my opinion, the film version was much better. Sorry.

I booked the tickets but was unsure if my husband, daughter and her partner would enjoy the show as we are not musical fans as a rule. We had the cheapest tickets so were seated in the Gods. However we still had a great view. The show was amazing. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our 3 day stay in London. The cast are fantastic and so talented. We would thoroughly recommend it.

This musical was an excellent performance. Watching the level of professionalism and multifaceted skills of adult and child performers alike was truly remarkable. The musical interpretations of such hard hitting social topics as sexuality, solidarity, family dynamics and class really worked

Another terrific performance which comes us as fresh as when new. Major gripe. Information on cast changes badly publicised, a small piece of paper at the box office giving some changes while the children appearing at that performance are listed in a totally different place. I bought a programme which is badly out of date and I couldn't see the name of the Billy I saw (Elliot Henry was it ?) A complete cast list should be prominently displayed at every performance

The play was fantastic. I truly enjoyed every bit of it! It was very entertaining and inspiring. The only thing that I wasn't comfortable with was the seating space. I felt the seats were crammed together and there was hardly an leg space. Besides that everything was great!!!

Great musical - serious and funny at same time. Acting was good. As there were so many children in the cast and lots of quite young children attending, I was a bit surprised at the amount of swearing there was on stage (from the child actors inparticular!)

Not as kid-friendly as I thought it might be but that was definitely a good thing! Very funny in parts, and the show gave a great contrast between the darkness of the mining strikes in the north east with the dancing. Well acted, in particular the transition from beginner to quality dancer.
