By Mischief Theatre
Following a triumphal six-month international tour and a Best New Comedy win at the What’s On Stage Awards 2014, The Play That Goes Wrong is now enjoying an extended run at the West End’s Duchess Theatre.
The Play That Goes Wrong is a side-splitting farce about an amateur drama society’s attempts to stage a 1920s murder mystery play. The group of hapless thespians and backstage crew battle fudged lines, crumbling sets and disappearing props as they claw their way desperately to the final curtain call.
The story of the play-within-a-play that goes hideously wrong has a long tradition in theatre, from Pyramus and Thisby’s attempted performance in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream to Michael Frayn’s hit Noises Off. Offering a flurry of sight gags and a hilarious script written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, The Play That Goes Wrong is a fantastic addition to this theatrical motif, exploiting the comic potential of theatrical misadventure to its absolute fullest.
Deftly directed by Mark Bell and featuring excellent performances by the entire cast, including Charlie Russell as the lead actor and Nancy Wallinger as the much-beleaguered stage manager, this mischievous symphony of perfectly-timed theatrical disasters is sure to become a cult hit.
This is the second time I’ve seen this play, both with other adults,I’m in my eighty’s.This matinee had many children and all of us laughed and joined in with the fun. The logistics are incredible. And how the cast come through unscathed is remarkable. The acting is excellent.
Too slapstick for us though our 13 year old quite enjoyed it.
Wasn’t sure what to expect but found this play very funny and enjoyed the casts interactions with the audience.
Extremely entertaining laughed all the way through
I watched this last night with my son for his 10th birthday. He and I loved it, it was so funny and kept catching us by surprise. We sat in the stalls, a rather central location which was great. But my parents have seen it up in the circle and said they still had a clear view. He has spent today talking about it and repeating lines and scenarios. He said "it was the funniest thing ever"; there was a wide range of age when we went and everyone was laughing. Definitely worth a watch!
Enjoyed every mad cap completely nutty moment, everyone roaring with laughter throughout.
came with high expectations of this show but sadly i hardly found it funny at all! the acting and the thought behind the show were good but it only caused me to properly laugh out loud once. would recommend if you have children and/or love slapstick humour but otherwise would avoid.
Truly spectacular. Nothing that could go wrong was missed out. Too much fun :-)
Really funny show. I laughed all the way through. Highly recommend
It was loads of laughs. Lots of unexpected twists. We enjoyed it very much.
I went with my wife, 22yr old son and his 21yr old girlfriend. We have not so much together in a long time! A thoroughly enjoyable and excellent performance by all the cast. It kept us entertained throughout. The comic timing was pure magic to watch and hear. Choreographed so, so well. Hats off to Cecil and the Inspector - simply brilliant.
It's genius! The whole play is a mess that will make you faint of laughter.
Didn’t stop laughing from start to finish
play was fantastic hysterically funny the comic timing of the whole cast was genuis - would definitely recommend
The Duchess theatre is great, we all seats had good views, including the kids, because there are large steps between all tiered seating (dress circle). We took our children 13 and 10 years of age and they spent the whole time laughing. Some obvious slap stick jokes and some less obvious really clever parts which had me crying in laughter. A good fun night out.
Probably the most funniest play going, it had everyone in stitches. A must see if you are up for a good giggle.
Brilliant play, I laughed from start to finish. So funny and brilliant acting. Well done all.
Wasn't sure about taking my Catalan grandson( age 18) to the play but I need not have worried as he, and I, loved every minute! He speaks good English but not his first language, We literally laughed every minute throughout. Brilliantly performed, a spoof and slapstick, done to perfection. Might even go again!
An excellent play from start to finish. Laugh out loud humour and slapstick comedy moments.
From arriving in the delightful and intimate Duchess Theatre where the fun and games of the play started immediately to the extremely comedic ending, we laughed and applauded the planning and meticulous timing of The Play That Goes Wrong. A very good evening out!
A great night out. So well written, very funny, very slapstick, brilliantly choreographed. Thoroughly enjoyable..
A brilliant show we laughed from start to finish
A really great show!! Full of 'drama', running gags & plenty of mishaps! We thoroughly enjoyed it and will recommend it to everyone we know. Well done the cast!
My second visit, this time with my 13-year old grandson. Just as side-splittingly funny as my first time. Each of the actors was brilliant in their role that made the evening thoroughly enjoyable. Thoroughly recommended. Can’t wait to go again!
So funny and brilliant acting!
This was the 2nd time I've seen this play and it is still as funny as the first time round belly laughed all the way through took my son to see it last night for his 21st and he loved it his a budding young actor in the making and so I knew it would be his sort off thing . Anyone hesitating to go dont ,go see it you will hurt from laughter and will enjoy well done to all the actors and actresses in it .
This was a birthday present from my wife as she knows how much I like Monty Python. I class it as one of the best presents she has ever given me I laughed from start to finish. I would recommend it to anyone. It is very professionally performed (weirdly) and there was not one moment where I thought it could be improved.
Very entertaining night out.
Took my 11 and 15 year olds to see this, their first play. they didn't stop laughing. a great show for all the family
Beautifully scripted. Superbly directed. This play was engaging from the onset. The talented cast kept the pace throughout. I would, thoroughly, recommend this to anyone who a fun, entertaining night out.
Timing is everything in a comedy.. And here is a comedy which originates from a bad timing.. Hilarious..
On what must be one of the hottest nights at the theatre (23/7/19) my grandson and I had a wonderful evening at The Duchess last night. All the cast must be congratulated - delivering a hilarious performance of this Oh! So Silly Play. Kudos to the Scenery and Props too - neither could be relied to stay in place ... A Joyful night all round - Thanks.
This was my second time to see this hilarious production . First time with my wife , second time to treat a good friend. Even knowing the plot didn't spoil the skilled execution of the humour . This is a fine example of coarse acting spilling into Farce , both of which need skill in effective delivery. The cast were well up to the task. Laughter from start to finish precipitated from all the cast . A brilliant evenings entertainment.
Alsolutely brilliant, laughed from start to finish. Can't wait to see the next one perhaps when magic goes wrong Thank you for a fabulous time.
The play was so hilarious from beginning to end! The cast were all excellent and the production went without a hitch.
Excellent night at the Duchess, Play that goes wrong Lots of laughs the second time around, audience loved it and so did we, took friends over from Australia
A fantastic production, the skills of the actors was second to none. The slap stick to hazardous farce was brilliant.
Highly entertaining. A great afternoon of fun.
Really great show from start to finish. Cast is allot of fun and love the way they engaged the audience. Really good fun!
This is the second time we ( Me, my Wife & Son ) have seen this play in less that one year. We needed cheering-up and this play does that so well, every time. We never stopped laughing, even though we knew what was coming the second time around. So, so funny and brilliantly played by a very special cast of players. Will we go a third time? You bet!
The skill of comedy timing and welcoming audience participation is awe inspiring. Lovely evenings entertainment.
Really funny from the start to finish. Stage was amazing and the theatre was small making the whole experience more intimate. Would definitely recommend you go see both this and the comedy about a bank robbery!
The performance had us laughing from the moment it started to the moment it finished. Brilliant production.
surprised hubby with tickets for the show after recommendations Just brilliant! laughed so much our faces ached. The interaction with the audience was genius. Well done, cannot wait to see more of your plays
Went with my son to see this play and we had a really great time. It’s a real laugh out loud play and the cast were brilliant. I would definitely recommend the play.
Great show, great audience interaction very spontaneous humour throughout. I loved every minute of it and I would love to come again to see the show !
An evening of laughter from the start of the show. It's hilarious throughout. The Cast are all brilliant and clearly having as much fun as the audience. It really is a must see if you want a lot of laughs.
Absolutely brilliant show! Couldn’t stop laughing throughout. Great show would be happy to watch it again.
