What’s The Book of Mormon about?
Devout Mormon missionary-in-waiting Elder Kevin Price is keen to teach his classmates how to convert people to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (“Hello!”), by just ringing their doorbells and smiling winningly. But Elder Price’s real dream is to be sent to Orlando, Florida for his two-year mission. Things go dramatically amiss when, instead, he’s sent to Uganda with Mormon misfit Elder Cunningham in tow.
Soon, these two ill-matched Mormon boys are completely out of their depth; robbed at gunpoint and sharing a village with locals whose motto is “Hasa Diga Eebowai” (something too rude to print here!). Worse is yet to come when the local Warlord arrives to terrorise the village.
As the situation spirals out of control, Elder Price begs for a transfer to Orlando.
Feeling abandoned but determined to do good, Elder Cunningham stays on, attempting to fulfil his mission to convert the villagers to Mormonism. When his best efforts to convert the village fail, Cunningham decides to liven things up by introducing new characters into the Mormon story – including hobbits, Lieutenant Uhura, Darth Vader and Yoda.
Across the Atlantic, a repentant Elder Price realises that he must return to Africa to help his friend, Elder Cunningham. Reunited, things soon descend into chaos as the Warlord, General Butt F***ing Naked returns. When Elder Price attempts to convert the General to the Mormon faith, things don’t go too well…resulting in Price visiting the local doctor to have his copy of the Book of Mormon removed from his rectum.
Can the boys achieve their mission and finally leave the villagers safe from General Butt F***ing Naked? Will the Mission President ever accept Darth Vader and Yoda into the Mormon faith? Find out with tickets to The Book of Mormon – the funniest West End show and voted Best Musical at the Grammy, Tony and Olivier Awards!
The Book of Mormon is a musical comedy with music, lyrics and book by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. It’s a satirical look at the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Parker and Stone (the creative team behind animated comedy South Park) joined forces with Lopez after seeing and loving his work on Avenue Q, and it’s this fusion of comedy, satire, and song-writing brilliance that makes The Book of Mormon such a hit with audiences, whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth!
The Book of Mormon songs
Musical The Book of Mormon helps tell the story of two Latter-day Saints missionaries, with songs including: Hello, Two by Two, You and Me (But Mostly Me), Hasa Diga Eebowai, Turn It Off, I Am Here For You, All American Prophet, Sal Tlay Ka Siti, Man Up, Making Things Up Again, Spooky Mormon Hell Dream, I Believe, Baptize Me, I Am Africa, Joseph Smith American Moses and Tomorrow Is A Latter Day.
The Book of Mormon awards
The Book of Mormon won an impressive nine Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.
The London production went on to add wins for Best New Musical and Best Theatre Choreographer amongst four Olivier Award statuettes.
The show also won a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre album.
Five Things You Might not know about The Book of Mormon
We all love The Book of Mormon, but how much do you really know about this long-running West End favourite? Here are five fun facts about the show:
1. Fears of mass protests about the content of the show turned out to be unwarranted. In fact, The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints has even started advertising in programmes with phrases like “You’ve seen the play, now read the book” and “The Book is always better!”
2. Many people know Trey Parker and Matt Stone through their work on South Park – less familiar to the public is the name Robert Lopez…that is until people find out he’s one half of the husband & wife song-writing team behind Disney’s Frozen, Frozen II, and Coco. He’s the youngest person ever to have won the “EGOT” (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards) for his song-writing, and now the only person ever to win them all at least twice!
3. The Book of Mormon and Frozen have another connection – Josh Gad, the actor who originated the role of Elder Cunningham on Broadway went on to provide the voice of Olaf in Disney’s Frozen.
4. One of the funniest lines in the show - “I have maggots in my scrotum!” – almost never happened…originally, the line was “I actually thought the third Matrix was the worst one” – a recurring joke around the fact that the Book of Mormon is the third book in a biblical trilogy.
5. Great musicals don’t happen overnight. The seed of an idea for The Book of Mormon was planted in 2003 - it took a full eight years of writes and rewrites before it finally came to the Broadway stage…and another three before making it across the Atlantic to the Prince of Wales Theatre!
What do critics think of The Book of Mormon?

Laugh out loud entertainment! Amazing from start to finish.
Great show, great singing, great actors and very funny BUT not for those who are easily offended! It includes racism, sexism, FGM, having sex with babies and much more! If you have a dark sense of humour then this is for you!
So glad we saw this show, well produced, fantastic cast, hilariously funny, would watch again when it tours nearer to home.
Very funny and well worth seeing
Lots of funny stuff with knowledge of a religion I new not much about. Very cynical but thought provoking.
Very funny and the songs and cast were amazing. Never been to the same musical twice but I think I'll be back to watch this one again.
I didn't really know what to expect as no-one would tell me and I think that made it even better. I was supposed to see this on Broadway 2 years ago, but am so glad we finally got to see it in the West End. It was truly amazing and fully deserving of the standing ovation at the end. Wonderful cast. Would recommend to anyone.
As a former exchange student in a Mormon family from Salt Lake City, I was having such a fun and entertaining time at the musical. The actors were so good and the songs were great! I would recommend anyone to go see this musical. We are still high on the experience the day after!
My daughter and I came from Berlin to see this show and absolutely LOVED it. Clever writing, unbelievable talent and so much laughter!
great talent and performance
The best night, funny, great songs and atmosphere
Excellent musical from start to finish and very funny
Really enjoyed this high energy show. Fabulous
By far the funniest musical we have ever seen. Were booked to see it in 2020, so have waited two years and it was well worth the wait. My face hurt from all the laughing. The performance was flawless and I would recommend this to anyone, except perhaps if you are in fact Mormon.
Fabulous, a bit risqué and power performance! Want to see it again!!!! :-))
This show is full of energy and zest from the get go. It is not for the faint hearted but the story and music are phenomenal as are the actors. Outstanding!
An outstanding performance of a fantastically funny musical. I visited on 22nd July having seen it once before, my boyfriend was seeing it for the first time and we both absolutely loved it. Great casting with infectious energy. We haven't been able to stop quoting/singing snippets since!
I had no idea what to expect of this show. It had been recommended but I knew nothing about the storyline and wouldn’t normally have chosen this show based purely on the title as I assumed it wouldn’t interest me (wrong I know!!!). The show was fantastic!!! We literally laughed from the minute it started to the end. It’s a show you can’t really explain without it sounding awful. It’s crude and rude but done in such a clever way that it’s just hilarious. The cast were amazing - every single one of them. The show is uplifting and full of energy. We walked out with a massive smile on our faces and couldn’t stop talking about it. I’d go and see it again tomorrow!!
This is a parody of religion some may find it offensive but i could not stop laughing!
The cast were all amazing and the show was hilarious, voices incredible and such a great night. Would highly recommend
First time seeing the show and it was amazing! Hilarious and every single actor was perfect for their characters. Would definitely watch again.
Went to see this show again for the 2nd time in 4 weeks and will def be going back again. It’s humour that you sometimes think “ should I be laughing at that “ while you are laughing out loud .hilarious .
I hate musicals usually but this is something else! A dark sense of humour with amazing actors. Second time I have seen it as well! Very impressed.
Outstanding performance the entire show was the best I’ve ever been to. My friend and I were really excited coming from Australia to watch a show in London and this was unmissable. The performers, the live music, the theatre and the props were perfect. This was our London highlight
It was naughty and rude....but so cleverly written that I laughed LOTS!!
Funny, rude and crude.....loved it and laughed so much
Fabulous show from start to finish. Wonderful voices from actors and could hear clearly the words to the story. Colourful and humourous.
Great cast and funny throughout.
A very professional show which was great fun so long as you are open minded. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
My third viewing, laugh out loud fabulous
By far the funnist Musical I've see at the theatre, couldn't really fault it. The actors, characters, plot line and gags were spot on all the way through. I'm not a big fan of musicals but thoroughly enjoyed this one. I will say this though, it can be a bit close to the mark so definitely parental guidence is advised if taking children.
I have not laughed so hard in a long time. Already planning to go and see again. I can safely say this is money well spent.
The show was hilarious, we all loved the show and had a great evening. The acting, singing, dancing and energy levels were incredible. So well written and produced, a laugh a minute!
Had a fantastic time, lots of laughs, The cast were amazing, great characters.
it was a great experience. The cast was superb, funny, full of energy and very talented! strongly recommended !
I was a bit skeptical when making the reservation to watch the show, however at the end of show I enjoy it. It was great musical and very comical shows and enjoy it. Not sure if audience from the US will understand the story but nevertheless it was a great and funny show for everyone.
I couldn't stop laughing. This show was incredible! I grew up in a very Mormon household and I thought this show nailed it. Very verr funny, very talented people performing. I already want to go again.
Controversial issues were certainly highlighted and deflected with a wicked sense of humour
This is a very funny show, although at some points it is quite touching. It is extremely irreverent and would potentially have the ability to offend but it makes you think. It also makes a change to see a show where we didn’t know the story in advance (wasn’t a “play of the film” or a revival and could simply enjoy where it went. We loved it and by the spontaneous standing ovation at the end, so did everyone else!
What I say that probably hasn’t been said already? It was fantastic from start to finish can’t recommend people seeing it enough.
Didn’t know what to expect but loved it halirious funny catchy songs loved it
We thoroughly enjoyed the Book of Mormon performance in the West End and I can safely say it was the best musical I have ever seen. The story is hillariously funny but even more impressive was the way it was brought to life by the exceptional performers - from the musicians to the actors/dancers & choerography it was simply outstanding. I can not recommend this highly enoug and would urge anyone to try and get tickets for this amazingly fabulous performance!
A really funny and engaging musical. Didn’t know what to expect and I loved it
Cutting edge and thought provoking comedy delivered through a slick high end production. Riveting from start to finish - I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Loved it:-this is my second BOM experience. The first time round it felt too funny; non-stop gags, however I would have wanted a longer breath in-between. The second time around was much better. The show has been slightly refreshed since my first visit. Summary.. super good, silly fun, obviously like Southpark noone is free from being made fun of.. and also I learned soo much about Mormon's.
It’s just incredible.
Saw it first time around too , it’s still funny . Well performed with just enough truth to make you think
We saw the show on Broadway in February. Our 50th Birthday treat. The West End Show was as good if not better as our view was perfect. I would see this show again and would recommend to anyone, you will be in stitches. Top top show. 👏
A lovely energetic, ensemble performance which left everybody with huge smiles
