Ages of the Moon by Sam Shepard

Debbie Hicks presents
AGES OF THE MOON
By Sam Shepard

Sam Shepard's poignant and intensely gripping play Ages of the Moon receives its long-awaited UK premiere, starring Christopher Fairbank (Auf Wiedersehen, Pet) and Joseph Marcell (The Fresh Prince of Bel Air).

On a hot summer's night, deep in the American wilderness, Byron and Ames are reunited by mutual desolation. By the fading light of an eclipsing moon, the pair reflect on love and life over a bottle of whiskey - and as old rivalries flare, their forty-year friendship is put to the test at the barrel of a gun.

Two old friends sitting on the porch of a run down shack drinking and chewing over past times whilst one waits to see a partial eclipse of the moon. Sam Shepard has built a world with words inhabited by two men creeping toward the end of their lives, misremembering and misinterpreting events long gone, the pain of remembering is tempered by the humour and affection they feel for each other . Christopher Fairbank and Joseph Marcell are pitch perfect in their interpretation of the two characters and their emotional journey, funny and moving. I was left with the sense that whilst we can predict to the minute the phases of the moon, our memories seem to slip from our grasp until the feelings they evoke become more important than the clarity of recollection.

This is how the play starts and this is how the play ends. There are 60 minutes of personal drama in a middle which is duly shared between two old buddies under the remains of their shaky memories. An hour well spent. All would be well if my bicycle was not vandalized outside. It was not in a script but for a bicycle thief, an hour is plenty to do his job.
